It does not come from Huichol that live in the city, but rather those who actually live in the sierra, those who are involved in doing the ceremonies and rituals that make up what it means to be Huichol. Santos Bautista is the son of Jose Bautista and grandson of Antonio Bautista one of the pioneers of Huichol art in the 1960's.
Because of their experience we have imported new Czech glass beads with metalic and iridescent colors for Santos to work with. The new colors not only give Santos a softer touch than the harsh primary colors that abound in the market but add a level of detail that seperate his work from the rest of the artists. Most commercial art is made up of sybols which at times can be like quilting or patchwork patterns while Santos work tends to use the piece as a whole and it flows or has motion to it. Please feel free to write us if you have any questions regarding any of the pieces in our collection or the Huichol that we work with. Peyote People has been recognized by the Huichol Traditional Government of San Andres Cohamiata for its work in the community and started a Fair Trade co-operative that promotes cultural authenticity by working with Huichol that actually live in the Sierra and are actively involved in the presvation of their cultures traditions.
