Unlike the burial tradition, The Asmat group of New Guinea would traditionally decorate the skulls of their ancestors as a sign of respect. Any openings of the skull such as the eyes and nasal cavity would be filled with natural elements; this tradition is believed by the natives to keep out evil spirits, and a headdress that is worn during ceremonial dances would be added to the skull. This ancestor skull would then be passed down from generation to generation and kept within the family. With this in mind, real Asmat skulls are a rare find as the family typically wouldnt let the skull leave the household.
